Miley Cyrus to make first public appearance since split, will perform new song at VMAs

Miley Cyrus will be riding her wrecking ball into MTV’s Video Music Awards Monday night.

The former Disney star is slated to perform “Slide Away,” her new breakup ballad. The song was released six days after a rep for Cyrus and longtime beau Liam Hemsworth told People magazine that the Hollywood couple had officially split after two broken-off engagements and a wedding last December.

This will be the 26-year-old Cyrus’ third time on the VMA stage. In 2015, the Tennessee native hosted the award, and in 2013 infamously sang a mashup of “We Can’t Stop” and “Blurred Lines” while gyrating in latex underwear alongside Robin Thicke.

“You can say I am a twerking, pot smoking , foul mouthed hillbilly but I am not a liar,” the hard-partying pop singer tweeted on Aug. 22, responding to a laundry list of grievances against her, including taking a bong hit of salvia at 18 and taking topless selfies. “I am simply in a different place from where I was when I was a younger,” said the former “Hannah Montana” star, shooting back at speculation that infidelity (on her side) caused the split with the 29-year-old star of “The Hunger Games.”

Cyrus, who identifies as pansℯxual, has been canoodling with Brody Jenner-ex Kaitlynn Carter on vacation in Italy and in West Hollywood, the duo even gifting Jenner a bouquet of weed for his birthday. Hemsworth, meanwhile, has been spending time with family in Australia but officially filed for divorce Aug. 21 in Los Angeles.

“It’s time to let it go,” croons Cyrus on the new single, which she will perform at Newark’s Prudential Center. The ceremony begins at 8 p.m. on MTV.
